Determinants of Financial Performance of Commercial Dairy Farms.

Data from the 1993 Farm Costs and Returns Survey were used in a multi-variate analysis framework to determine factors associated with the financial performance of commercial dairy farm operations. Statistical equivalency tests revealed regional differences in the way extensive indebtedness, size of operation, and labor cost affect net farm incomes. Regional differences were also found in terms of how milk production per cow, per-unit cost of purchased feed, and level of adoption of capital intensive technologies affect per-unit returns. Examination of the variation in the net farm income of commercial dairy farms using the method of coefficients of separate determination identified the size of the operation, regardless of the location of the farm business, as the factor contributing the most to the variability in net farm income. SUCCESSION IN FAMILY FARM BUSINESS: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM THE U.S. FARM SECTOR

Survival of many family farms is dependent on successful intergenerational transfer. Given the importance of succession in the farm sector, the purpose of this paper is to examine factors that are likely to influence succession decisions on U.S. farms. The paper uses 2001 ARMS data and a multinomial Logit (MNL) regression to estimate family succession, non-family succession, and farm exit decisions of farm households in the U.S. Model choice and specification issues are discussed. Results indicate that operator's education, household wealth, growth in farm size, and farm debt are important factors that determine succession decisions. Asymptotic description of solitary wave trains in fully nonlinear shallow-water theory

We derive an asymptotic formula for the amplitude distribution in a fully nonlinear shallow-water solitary wave train which is formed as the long-time outcome of the initial-value problem for the Su-Gardner (or one-dimensional Green-Naghdi) system. Our analysis is based on the properties of the characteristics of the associated Whitham modulation system which describes an intermediate "undular bore" stage of the evolution. The resulting formula represents a "non-integrable" analogue of the well-known semi-classical distribution for the Korteweg-de Vries equation, which is usually obtained through the inverse scattering transform. Our analytical results are shown to agree with the results of direct numerical simulations of the Su-Gardner system. Our analysis can be generalised to other weakly dispersive, fully nonlinear systems which are not necessarily completely integrable.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figure

Experimental and analytical investigation of the fracture processes of boron/aluminum laminates containing notches

Experimental results for five laminate orientations of boron/aluminum composites containing either circular holes or crack-like slits are presented. Specimen stress-strain behavior, stress at first fiber failure, and ultimate strength were determined. Radiographs were used to monitor the fracture process. The specimens were analyzed with a three-dimensional elastic-elastic finite-element model. The first fiber failures in notched specimens with laminate orientation occurred at or very near the specimen ultimate strength. For notched unidirectional specimens, the first fiber failure occurred at approximately one-half of the specimen ultimate strength. Acoustic emission events correlated with fiber breaks in unidirectional composites, but did not for other laminates. Circular holes and crack-like slits of the same characteristic length were found to produce approximately the same strength reduction. The predicted stress-strain responses and stress at first fiber failure compared very well with test data for laminates containing 0 deg fibers

The infinite-genus limit of the KdV-Whitham equations is derived. The limit involves special scaling for the associated spectral surface such that the integrated density of states remains finite as $N \to \infty$ (the thermodynamic type limit). The limiting integro-differential system describes slow evolution of the density of states and can be regarded as the kinetic equation for a soliton gas

A unified approach to testing for and against a set of linear inequality constraints in the product multinomial setting

AbstractA problem that is frequently encountered in statistics concerns testing for equality of multiple probability vectors corresponding to independent multinomials against an alternative they are not equal. In applications where an assumption of some type of stochastic ordering is reasonable, it is desirable to test for equality against this more restrictive alternative. Similar problems have been considered heretofore using the likelihood ratio approach. This paper aims to generalize the existing results and provide a unified technique for testing for and against a set of linear inequality constraints placed upon on any r(r≥1) probability vectors corresponding to r independent multinomials. The paper shows how to compute the maximum likelihood estimates under all hypotheses of interest and obtains the limiting distributions of the likelihood ratio test statistics. These limiting distributions are of chi bar square type and the expression of the weighting values is given. To illustrate our theoretical results, we use a real life data set to test against second-order stochastic ordering
